I knew what a baker's dozen was, and that it was supposedly so a baker wouldn't be accused of short-changing, but this Wikipedia entry really gets interesting.
First off, it claims that a baker wouldn't just be accused of short-changing customers, but might have his hand cut off with an axe for doing so. Sheesh, baking was a dangerous profession.
And then, it goes on to say that probably wasn't the reason for the tradition anyway, that it was more about what fit into a box, because otherwise there might be a "butcher's dozen."
