Greg Berlanti, the co-creator of Arrow, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and upcoming Riverdale on The CW, is set to helm a revamped version of Little Shop of Horrors from a script by writer/director Matthew Robinson ("The Invention of Lying").
The musical will be a "fresh take" on the famous story, which tells of a clumsy dentist who inadvertently raises a sentient carnivorous plant who forces him to kill people in order to eat.
In 1960, Roger Corman directed the first The Little Shop of Horrors with a young Jack Nicholson in a memorable if short role as a dental patient seeking pain relief. In 1982, Howard Ashman staged an off-Broadway play with Alan Menken composing the music. In 1986, Ashman returned to the world of dentists and carnivorous plants with a screenplay for Frank Oz's turn at directing Little Shop, which starred Rick Moranis, Ellen Green, Steve Martin, Christopher Guest, Jim Belushi, John Candy, and Bill Murray.
The last time Berlanti picked up a camera to direct a feature film was in 2010 with Life as We Know It, a romantic comedy starring Josh Duhamel, Katherine Heigl, Josh Lucas, and Christina Hendricks.
