Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 champion, has retired from the US Open due to his continued recovery from left foot surgery, the tournament announced Monday.
The former n. 3 holds a record of 44-13 in the last major of the season. He lifted his third Grand Slam trophy at Flushing Meadows five years ago, completing an impressive run by defeating the No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final.
Wawrinka has made at least the quarter-finals of the US Open in six of his last nine appearances. In his last performance two years ago, he reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev.
The Swiss star does not compete from Doha in March. After the retirement of Wawrinka, the former No. 1 and 2012 champion Andy Murray enters the main draw.
